Obituary

Doris C. "Chickie" (Flanagan) McGunigle, a 43 year resident of Melrose, died on Monday, April 19, 2010, at her daughter's home in Wakefield following a brief and courageous battle with cancer. She was 71 years old.

Chickie was born in Boston on August 3, 1938. She grew up in Charlestown, where she attended St. Francis De Sales Parochial School and graduated from Charlestown High School in 1954. Chickie worked as a Medical Secretary for over 20 years at the former New England Memorial Hospital in Stoneham. She loved traveling to Cape Cod and Maine, being near the ocean, but most of all, Chickie devoted her life to her children and spending as much time as possible with her grandchildren.

Chickie is the beloved wife of the late William G. McGunigle Jr. She is the devoted mother of Linda Cogan of Wakefield and William G. McGunigle, III, of Melrose. She is the loving Grammy to Ryan and Daniel Cogan, Megan, Gregory and Bridget McGunigle. She is the mother-in-law of Marlene McGunigle of Melrose. She is the sister of the late Daniel Flanagan. She is the dear sister-in-law of Betty Flanagan of Saugus and John McGunigle of Az. She is the loving aunt of many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Chickie's Funeral on Thursday, April 22, 2010, at 9 a.m. from The Carr Funeral Home, 1159 Main Street, Melrose, followed by her Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, (corner of Myrtle & Herbert Streets) Melrose, at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose. Visiting hours for Chickie will be on Wednesday, April 21, 2010, from 4 to 8 p.m.
