Obituary

Eleanor M. (McGonagle) Downey, a 22-year resident of Saugus and formerly of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Thursday, October 19, 2023, at her home in Saugus. She was 88 years of age.

Eleanor was born in Boston on March 25, 1935, a daughter of the late James McGonagle and Helen (O'Connell) McGonagle. She grew up in Charlestown where she was educated in the Boston Public School system and graduated from Charlestown High School. Eleanor worked as a Supervisor for the Holiday Inn in Somerville for over 30 years and then worked at The Hampton Inn in Cambridge for 10 years before retiring. In her spare time, Eleanor enjoyed traveling to Twin Rivers Casino.

Eleanor is the beloved wife of the late David R. Downey. She is the devoted mother of David R. Downey Jr. and Kevin J. Downey. She is the loving Nan to Colin Downey and his wife Anna, and Patrick Downey. She is the devoted sister and best friend of Carol McGonagle and her late brothers, Robert McGonagle and James McGonagle. She is also the dear aunt to Brian Santos.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Eleanor's visiting hours on Monday morning, October 23, 2023, from 10 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. in The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by her Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, 55 Warren St. Charlestown at 12 Noon. Her burial at the Veteran's Administration National Cemetery in Bourne will be private.
