Obituary

Freda M. (Hoppes) Getherall, a longtime resident of Charlestown and formerly of Kokomo, Indiana, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, April 22, 2026 at the Southwood at Norwell Nursing Center. She was 99 years old.

Freda was born in Kokomo, Indiana on April 1, 1927, a daughter of the late Floyd Hoppes and Arminta (Whitaker) Hoppes. She grew up in Kokomo where she attended elementary school and graduated high school in Elwood, Indiana. Frida moved to Charlestown in 1953 and worked as a telephone operator for New England Telephone Company, which later became Verizon. She was an active writer for the Charlestown Patriot during the forced bussing era. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, and genealogy, but loved her family above all else. She was a former member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, and a retired member of IBEW Local #103

Freda is the beloved wife of the late Boston Firefighter Thomas H. "Sparky" Getherall. She is the devoted mother of Jean Regan and her husband Cornelius, Paul Getherall and his wife Cindy, and the late Thomas F. Getherall and his surviving wife Carol. She is the mother-in-law of the late Peter Michalozski. She is the loving Grammy of Peter and his wife Jenn, John and his wife Michelle, Donna and her husband Bill, Kristine, Lauren and her husband Michael, and to her great-grandchildren Michael, Ashley, Sean, Andrea and her husband Matthew, Ryan, Natalie, Andrew, Cameron, Trey, Maya, Jared and his wife Corinne, Marissa, Kiley, and to her great-great grandchildren Vinny, Phoenix, Bella, Landon, and Kaysen. She is the dear sister of the late Ruth Walsh, Paul Hoppes, and Howard Hoppes. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Freda's funeral on Friday, May 1, 2026 at 10 A.M. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown, followed by her Funeral Mass at 11 A.M. in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown. Her burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden. Her visiting hours will be held on Thursday, April 30, 2026 from 4 P.M. to 7 P.M. in the funeral home.
