James R. "Hank" Harrington, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, died suddenly on Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was 81 years old.
Hank was born in Boston on August 7, 1928. He grew up in Charlestown where he attended Boston Public Schools. He enlisted into the United States Army on April 19, 1951 and served his country during the Korean Conflict. He was discharged on April 21, 1953 with the rank of Private. Hank worked for over 30 years as a Longshoreman on the Boston waterfront and was a member of the International Longshoreman's Association.
Hanks is the husband of the late June L. (Watson) Harrington. He is the devoted father of Tracy Salvi and her husband Bob of Groveland, Kim Terry of Groveland, Gail Lopez of Malden and the late Robert Nixon. He is the loving Papa to 15 grandchildren. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Hank's Funeral on Saturday, May 15, 2010, at 9 a.m. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill Street, Charlestown, followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, 55 Warren Street, Charlestown, at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett. Visiting hours are Friday, May 14, 2010, from 4 to 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, kindly make a memorial donation in Hank's name to Chelsea Soldiers Home, c/o Activities Fund, 91 Crest Avenue, Chelsea, MA 02150.
