Obituary

Jean A. Tochterman, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life unexpectedly in her home on Friday, July 3, 2026, just 4 days shy of her 90th birthday.

Born in Boston on July 7, 1936, a daughter of the late James Tochterman and Grace (Walker) Tochterman. Her early years in Charlestown were filled with adventure, from playing aboard the USS Constitution to creating lasting friendships. Jean embarked on her professional journey at Mass Bonding and later took on the role of operator at Boston Filter. Following her studies at Katharine Gibbs Secretarial College, she dedicated over three decades to the Boston Globe's Accounts Payable department. There, her unmatched dedication and warmth forged countless bonds, culminating in her retirement in 1998. Her retirement was richly spent with family, particularly with her beloved mother, and Jean cherished every moment with her nephews and niece. Known for her indomitable spirit and love for community, Jean engaged deeply with Charlestown, contributing to organizations like Courageous Sailing, the Charlestown Waterfront Coalition, the Bunker Hill Monument Association, and Friends of the Charlestown Navy Yard. At 82, Jean embraced a new chapter as an administrator for DC Beane and Associates Construction, becoming a cornerstone of the team on Pier 3. Her welcoming nature and infectious smile left an indelible mark. Jean's presence in Charlestown will be deeply missed, yet her legacy of warmth, community service, and unwavering friendship will endure in the hearts of all who knew her.

Jean is the beloved aunt of Douglas Snow and his wife Christine, and Christopher Snow and his wife Rachel. She is the dear great-aunt of Jami Snow. She was predeceased by her sister Florence Marotta. She is also survived by innumerable friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Jean’s visiting hours on Wednesday morning, July 8, 2026 from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M. in The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown. He burial will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett.
