Obituary

Joan (Monahan) Smith, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, died on Saturday April 26, 2008 at her home in Charlestown following a courageous battle with cancer. She was 72 years old.

Joan was born in Boston, she grew up in Charlestown where she attended Boston Public Schools and graduated from Charlestown High School in 1953. Joan was a homemaker, dedicating herself to her husband and children.

Joan is the beloved wife of the late Robert D. Smith. She is the devoted mother of Dianne L. Ortega and her husband Martin of Dorchester, Joan M. Smith of Charlestown and the late Robert D. Jr., Michael K. and Edward N. Smith. She is the loving grandmother of Annemarie Sanneh and her husband Alphah and Daniel J. Ortega.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours for Joan on Wednesday April 30, 2008 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown with a Funeral Service at 8 p.m. in the funeral home. Cremation will take place following her service.
