Obituary

Joan E. (Spanks) Schertell, a longtime resident of Charlestown and formerly of Dorchester, entered into eternal life unexpectedly in her home on Friday, March 26, 2021. She was 86 years of age.

Joan was born in Boston on August 17, 1934, a daughter of the late William Spanks and Ester (Hoffman) Spanks. She grew up in Boston where she was educated in the Boston Public School system and graduated high school. Joan worked as a telephone operator for the New England Telephone Company which later became AT&T. Joan loved gardening and would often become lost in her work tending to her various vegetables and plants.

Joan is the beloved wife of the late William Schertell. She is the devoted mother of James Schertell, and the late Robert Schertell. She is the loving sister of James, William, and the late Millie.
