John W. Cronin, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life unexpectedly on Friday, May 30, 2025, at his home in Charlestown. He was 81 years of age.
John was born in Boston on February 25, 1944, a son of the late John Cronin and Lucille (Guthrie) Cronin. He grew up in Charlestown where he was educated in the Boston Public School system and graduated from Charlestown High School in 1962. John lived in Everett for several years after getting married but always considered his home to be Charlestown. John worked for several years at the Charlestown Naval Shipyard before it was forced to close in 1976. He then began his career with the United States Postal Service where he worked for many years and retired as a Clerk.
John was a true gentleman and very proud of being self-sufficient who could be seen making his way along Warren St. from his home to the Bunker Hill Mall where he would commiserate with his friends at Dunks. He enjoyed playing the lottery and attending the Hayes Square reunions. His family is deeply grateful to all the concerned fellow Townies who over the years attempted to give John a ride, do his errands or just a simple gesture of checking in on him.
John is the beloved husband of the late Joyce A. (Boutwell) Cronin. He is the devoted father of Jennifer Cronin and John Andrew Cronin. He is the beloved brother of Joan Damiano and her late husband Mike and the late Margaret "Peggy" Donovan. He is the loving uncle to Tim Donovan and his wife Elaine, Margaret Daneau and her husband Peter, Joseph Damiano and also his loving grandnieces and grandnephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend John's visiting hours on Thursday morning, June 5, 2025, from 9:30 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. in The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, 55 Warren St. Charlestown at 12 Noon. His burial is private.
In lieu of flowers, kindly make a memorial donation in John's name to The Friends of Ryan "Duce" Morrissey Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 290009, Charlestown, Mass. 02129
