Joseph "Joe" R. Flaherty, a 55-year resident of Medford and formerly of Cambridge, entered into eternal life unexpectedly on Monday, July 6, 2026, at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital in Melrose. He was 84 years of age.
Joe was born in Cambridge on October 21, 1941, a son of the late Richard Flaherty and Sarah (Barrett) Flaherty who both immigrated from Ireland. Joe grew up in North Cambridge where he was educated at St. John's Parochial School and graduated from a catholic high school in the area. Joe enlisted into the United States Air Force on July 23, 1959, and served his country with honor and sacrifice during the Vietnam Conflict. He was honorably discharged on July 16, 1963, with the rank of Airman First Class. Joe began working for Cambridge Gas Company in 1963 following his military discharge and worked for over 50 years as a Meter Reader for which is now Eversource Gas & Electric. Joe was a family man and enjoyed all the quality moments spent with his wife, children and grandchildren. He was affectionally known as "Mr. Rogers" .
Joe is the beloved husband of 55 years to Patty (Boyden) Flaherty. He is the loving Dad to Tricia Flaherty and Kate Doyle. He is the loving Grandpa to Cindy Davis and the late Nate Davis. He is the loving great-Grandpapa to Kaiden, Autumn and Willow. He is the beloved brother of Ann Richardson and Peggy Brisson. He is the son-in-law of the late Jim and Ann Boyden. He is the brother-in-law of Ann Norton. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Joe's visiting hours on Sunday afternoon, July 12, 2026, from 1 P.M. to 3 P.M. followed by a Prayer Service at 3 P.M. in The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown. His burial will be private.
