Maureen Gaffney Lavely, of Charlestown, MA, died on May 28, 2026, at age 91. Born May 2, 1935, she was raised in The Bronx, New York, daughter of Harold and Dorothy Ahders Gaffney. Predeceased by husband Henry as well as former husband Donald Koeller. Survived by daughter Kathryn Marie Koeller Bosworth, husband Charles and their children Rebecca Sobon, her husband Cory, and Gregory; son Jonathan Peter Koeller, his wife Susan and their children Megan Frisch, her husband Bobby, and Elizabeth Koeller. Predeceased was son, Steven Walter Koeller survived by his children Hilary Koeller Smith, her husband Zachary, daughters Matilda and Eliza, and Hannah Koeller, her husband Luke and son Walt. Beloved stepchildren include Tony and Marty Lavely, Anne De Serio, Henry and Wendy Lavely, Christopher Lavely and Harry Ewan, Daniel and Jodi Lavely, Garth Lavely. Beloved step-grandchildren include Cinda and son J.J., David and his wife Nicole and son Jagger, Jason and his wife Brenda, Nicole and her husband Charles and sons C.J. and Rowan, Madison, Cameron and wife Mayra, Katrina and Daulton. Maureen was predeceased by her brother Bill Gaffney and his daughter Patricia Comello, and survived by niece Lynn Imperatore and her husband Herman, and nephew Bill Gaffney and many wonderful cousins, nieces and nephews.
Maureen retired as a Project Coordinator from Education Development Center, formerly employed by Digital Equipment Corporation, but most loved her years teaching Kindergarten and 2nd grade in the Concord and Acton, MA, school systems. She was a member of the Liberty Belle Chorus of Sweet Adelines, formerly in Arlington, MA, for 25 years.
She filled her life in retirement with many hobbies centered around community and joyful togetherness. She cuddled babies in the Tufts Hospital NICU, volunteered at MANNA for the homeless at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Boston, visited detainees in the detention center at Suffolk Jail, was an election poll worker for many years and strongly believed in participatory democracy. Maureen was an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Charlestown and also the Charlestown Lions Club. Her joy was spending time with family and friends; her interests were reading, walking, activities in the city, swimming, singing, and traveling; and her passion was for justice and peace for all.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Greater Boston Food Bank or local community charity of your choice.
May her generous spirit, warm heart, and boundless love live on in all who were blessed to know her.
