Michael J. "Smokey" Cain, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Saturday, September 26, 2026 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House following a courageous battle with cancer. He was 61 years of age.

Smokey was born in Boston on October 25, 1964, a son of the late James E. Cain and Eleanor M. (Ahearn) Cain. He grew up in Charlestown where he was educated in the Boston Public School System and was a proud graduate of Boston Latin School. Smokey was a devoted servant known for his unwavering loyalty to his family and community. He touched countless lives through years of service, generosity, laughter, and a genuine desire to uplift others. He served as a Recovery Navigator with the Gavin Foundation, where he dedicated himself to helping families and people affected by addiction find hope, support, and a path toward recovery. Through this work, he helped change and save lives. His commitment to serving others extended far beyond his professional work. As a beloved and talented DJ, Smokey generously donated his time and heart to countless nonprofits, fundraisers, and community events, using his gifts to bring people together and spread joy and laughter. He was a member of the Bunker Hill Associates, served as a Trauma Specialist with the Charlestown Community Healing and Action Team, a Peer Grief Specialist with The Sun Will Rise Foundation, and served on the board of the local nonprofit Scars in Heaven. In his free time, Smokey enjoyed playing poker with friends and, most of all, spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Smokey is the beloved father of Melanie Cain, Sheena Centola, Jacob Pratt, Jacqueline Pratt, and the late Michael Cain II. He is the loving Papa of Colin, Anaya, Jason, Aaliyah, Michaelyn, and Aaliyah Pratt. He is the dear brother of the late Kevin and Jimmy Cain. He is also survived by the mother of his children and life partner, Lisa Centola, and many loving nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Smokey's funeral on Friday, October 2, 2026 at 10 A.M. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown, followed by his Funeral Mass at 11 A.M. in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown. His burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden. His visiting hours will be on Thursday, October 1, 2026 from 4 P.M. to 7 P.M. in the funeral home.
