Retired Boston Firefighter David C. Johnson, a 58-year resident of Medford and formerly of Charlestown entered into eternal life on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at his home in Medford. He was 83 years of age.
David was born in Boston on April 19, 1943, a son of the late Carl W. Johnson and Agnes (McGonagle) Johnson. He grew up in Charlestown where he was educated in the Boston Public School system and graduated from Charlestown High School in 1961. David was appointed to the Boston Fire Department in 1968 and served his Charlestown community for 38 years as a dedicated firefighter assigned to Engine Company 50 on Winthrop St. in Charlestown. He was then assigned to the Boston Fire Department Academy for the last 2 years of his career where he taught and nurtured the new recruits joining the Boston Fire Department. In 2008, David retired from the Boston Fire Department and Engine Company 50 following 40 years of dedicated service to the people of Charlestown and the City of Boston. He was a member of The Boston Firefighters Union Local # 718 and past Treasurer of the Charitable Association of the Boston Fire Department. In his distinguished career with the Boston Fire Department, David received several awards and citations including The Chief John V. Stapleton Award, The Martin E. Pierce Sr. Medal, The Life Membership Local 718 Award, The Boston Firefighters Long And Faithful Service Award and The Boston Fire Department Distinguished Service Award. He was also a member of The Halligan Club in Charlestown and The Boston Fire Department Liars Club.
David was a tremendous man of faith, and he devoted himself to St. Francis De Sales Church in Charlestown for many years as a volunteer and a eucharistic minister. In his spare time, he enjoyed summering in Bartlett, New Hampshire, playing golf and softball, hiking the white mountains in New Hampshire and was also an avid gardener.
David is the beloved husband of 62 years to Ann L. (Kelly) Johnson. He is the devoted father to Ann E. Johnson, David M. Johnson and his wife Laura, Leah Whaerty and her husband Tom, Christine Kiernan and her husband Mark, Linda Generazio and her husband Tom, Susan Ikeda and her husband Koji, Michael Johnson and his wife Amanda, Katherine Kapadia and her husband Mayank and the late Carl W. Johnson II. He is the loving Papa to his 34 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He is the brother of the late Paul Johnson and Linda Gallagher. He is also survived by his many loving nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend David's Funeral on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 at 10 A.M. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown at 11 A.M. His burial will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden. His visiting hours will be on Monday, June 15, 2026, from 4 P.M. to 7 P.M. in the funeral home.
