Obituary

Retired Boston Police Officer Richard M. "Richie" Doherty, age 73, of Ryegate, Vermont and formerly of Charlestown, passed away on August 14, 2026 peacefully at his home surrounded by the love of family and friends.

Richie was born in Boston on April 16, 1953, the son of the late Cornelius W. Doherty and Agnes (Costin) Doherty. He was preceded in death by his brother, Cornelius "Connie" Doherty, Jr. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 20 yrs, Paula (Rogerson) Doherty; his son, Richard Doherty, Jr. of South Boston; his brother John Doherty of Naples, Florida; 14 nieces and nephews and 10 great nieces and nephews, along with many other family and close friends who will sadly miss him.

Richie grew up in Charlestown, where he attended St. Catherine’s Parochial School and Boston Public schools. He graduated from Charlestown High in 1972 where he was the Senior Class President. He graduated from Western New England College in 2005 with a BS in Criminal Justice, becoming the first person in his family to graduate from college.

Richie dedicated 38 years to the City of Boston. He started working as a 911 dispatch operator in 1974, he then became an EMS technician for Boston EMS in 1980 and served as a Boston Police officer from 1986 until his retirement in 2012. He first worked in Roxbury at Station B2 then served as a South Boston Community Service Officer for 20 years. He enjoyed working with civic groups and was very proud of the Youth Fishing Program that he ran during the summers in South Boston. Richie had a warm and welcoming personality making friends wherever he went. His pride of being a “Townie” never waned even when he left the city for the mountains of Vermont.

Richie retired in 2012 and spent most of his remaining years enjoying the views from his beautiful log home in Ryegate. Richie loved his Boston Sports teams, especially the Patriots hosting several memorable Super Bowl parties at his home in Vermont. He enjoyed travel, fishing and hunting, trains, was a history buff and loved music especially Doo Woop and Oldies.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Richie's funeral on Friday, August 28, 2026 at 10 A.M. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass at 11 A.M. in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown.
